This Week's Cultural News

A deep introspection into the lives of Korean-Japanese in works that show cultural exchange between Korea and Japan, is a popular theme these days.
And one such piece is the play "Yakiniku Dragon".

[Interview : Go Soo-hee, Actress] "I think that when people watch the play, they feel like they are also standing on the stage which depicts a story of 40 years ago".

[Interview : Shofukutei Ginpei, Actor] "I believe that this play presents the connecting point between human relations".

"Yakiniku Dragon", a play written by playwright and director Chong Wishing, describes the life of a Korean-Japanese family in Kansai during the late 1960s.
Featuring a set that is familiar to the Korean audience, the play spans through the four seasons, opening at spring, and closing at spring again in the end.
The combination of the storyline and presentation puts "Yakiniku Dragon" on a different scale of its own.
This is because the real worries and concerns of Korean-Japanese are portrayed vividly on stage.
The play, filled with marriage, infidelity, ostracism, suicide and farewell, takes a deep look into the lives of Korean-Japanese 40 years ago.
The props stay the same during the entire 2 hour and 45 minute play.
It is relatively long for a play.
However, it is hardly boring, as the audience does not simply watch the play, but partakes in it.
Throughout the play, the audience can't help but sympathize with the lives of Korean-Japanese, and conversely, feel hope and a sense of comfort from the actors.

[Interview : Chong Wishing, Director] "This isn't a family story only heard in Korea and Japan. Instead, the audience should think of the family featured in the play as their own".

[Interview : Go Soo-hee, Actress] "I hope many people will watch the play as both Korea and Japan co-produced it".

[Interview : Shofukutei Ginpei, Actor] "I think that many people in Korea are aware of the problems surrounding Korean-Japanese residents, but acknowledging their achievements to date even just a bit will make them feel better".
