Three Comic Strips to Become Cultural Assets

Classic South Korean comic strips "The Scroogy Old Man", "The Rabbit and the Monkey" and "Searching for Mom" will be registered as cultural heritages.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Thursday that it plans to register the three comics as cultural assets.

The administration said "The Scroogy Old Man" is the oldest comic strip in the country and has been printed since the 1950s and run in a daily newspaper over four-thousand times since 1955. It assessed that the comic strip also has important academic and historical value in the study of modern history.

The comic book "The Rabbit and the Monkey" was drawn by Kim Yong-hwan based on writer Ma Hae-song's story from 1946. It is the oldest comic book in the country that describes South Korea's aspiration for independence in light of political situations before and after the country's liberation from Japan.

"Searching for Mom" is a classic historical comic strip drawn that was released by Kim Jong-rae in 1958. It became the first ever best-seller through its characterization of South Korea's impoverished society and prevalent corruption in the country before and after the Korean War.
