Too Late for 'Toothless Rapper' to Join the Military

The Government Legislation Office on Tuesday confirmed that rapper MC Mong, who was accused of pulling out his teeth to avoid the draft, cannot serve in the military even if he wants to. Mong (32) was cleared by a court of the charge, and the GLO said he is now over 31, the eligible age for conscription.

The Military Manpower Administration recently asked the GLO whether Mong could join the military if he wishes, even though he had passed the age limit. The rapper said in a press conference after his acquittal in April that he could not join the military even if he wanted to and that the only way for him to do so was to be found guilty.

The GLO confirmed this. "Military service is a duty and not a right according to the Constitution, and as a result, MC Mong has no right to choose whether to serve on active duty or in the second tier", it said. The second tier refers to non-active duty service.

"The 31-year age limit for active duty is a uniform rule that takes into account the need for efficient management of troops and the specialized and public nature of the military, and conscription cannot be swayed by the desires of individuals", it added.
