Trunk Animation to snap up a US$2M collaboration deal with an Italian company

Another original Korean animation is to be made through a joint production with a foreign company.

Trunk Animation (CEO: Kang, Nam-Kyu) said last January 9, "We have recently concluded a US$2M deal with Cartoon One, an Italian production company, for the joint production of the 3D HDTV animation Robot ARPO".

Robot ARPO, whose theme is the future harmony between the human race and robots, is currently in the production stage. It is targeted to be broadcast in 2009. Even when it was still in the pre-production stage, the animation already drew the interest of Fox TV in the U.S. and SUN TV in India when it was showcased in MIPCOM in France, Gwangju International Creative Exhibition, and SICAF Animation Exhibition.

Cartoon One, Trunk Animation's partner in this deal, is the company behind works like Felix the Cat and The School of Vampires. It will be in charge of the scenario, storyboard making, and post-production aspects (e.g., music, SFX sounds, and editing) of Robot ARPO.Top-rated American and European animation writers who have worked for Sponge Bob Squarepants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will join the production.

Based on the scenario and storyboard created by Cartoon One, Trunk Animation will handle every CG work and will jointly direct the animation.

Once completed, Robot ARPO will be showcased in the European market via Cartoon One's distribution network.

"We expect this joint production to improve the quality of the storytelling and post-production of the animation, which are considered weak spots of Korean animation", said Kang, Nam-Kyu, CEO of Trunk Animation, regarding the joint production deal. "This deal has provided us with the foundation from which Korean animation can distribute its products in the global market from the pre-production stage".
