TV drama produced by two Koreas to hit air in 2006

The first episode of a television drama series co-produced by South and North Korea is expected to hit the air as early as August 2006.

"Sayuksin,' comprising 24 episodes each of 70 minutes in length, is now in production by South Korean television network KBS and North Korea's Chosun Central TV. The title refers to six loyal retainers who served King Danjong (1441-1457; reign1452-55), the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

"It's a kind of outsourcing project", said Kim Yong-ki of KBS's Inter-Korean Broadcast Cooperation Team. "As Chosun Central TV produces the series, we pay for production costs. Most of the payment was made with broadcasting equipment such as cameras and lighting facilities.'

After the discussions about the story, North Korean writers prepared the script that was later revised by writers from the South. The rest will be produced by North Korean staff, Kim said.

The series star all North Korean actors, including popular dancer Cho Myong-ae, who now appears in Samsung mobile phone commercials, and will be shot in the streets of Pyongyang, Gaeseong and Mt. Myohyangsan, and in the studios of Chosun Central TV.

The staff from the two Koreas began meeting in September 2003 in such places as Gaeseong and Mt. Geumgang. Last January, they agreed to produce a drama series about historic figures based on research.

The shooting started on July 28 and is likely to be completed in summer 2006. The series is also expected to air in North Korea as KBS gave its North Korean counterpart the right to air the program, Kim said.

"Sayuksin' tells the story of six loyalists who died in their attempt to restore dethroned King Danjong after notoriously brutal King Sejo seized power. King Sejo is known to have killed scholars who fought against his tyranny.
