[TV Program] Buy and Sell Contents on IPTV

IPTV will be offering new services such as mobile content stores (App Store) for the buying and selling of various contents.

While it is difficult to produce many applications due to a lack of function control on IPTV, high-quality videos and games are likely to be popular items.

On January 24, LG Telecom announced that the myLGtv service will be upgrading its "home channel" to allow companies and individuals to freely upload contents like VoD.

The company provides numerous channels, ranging from 1000 to 9999, on the home channel menu. The contents of the existing 14 channels will be massively expanded to meet the diverse tastes of viewers.

At present, there are 550 contents for uploading including musical instrument lessons, the latest game videos, music videos, and backpacking documentaries. Most contents are available free of charge, while some VoDs are priced at 500~3000 won.

Manager Son Jeong-hyo of the Media Business Division at LG Telecom said, "Recently, one company uploaded a game trailer that became a big hit, leading to an export agreement.

We plan to assist content developers in selling their contents not only on myLGtv but also to other digital broadcasting and overseas".

KT and SK Broadband are also pursuing the establishment of an open platform to enable the exchange of contents on IPTV. In 2010, KT plans to introduce an open business model similar to App Store that will allow content companies to participate in the IPTV platform within this year.

Last year, SK Broadband opened independent channels for broadcasting stations and content companies to promote television commerce (T-commerce) and advertisements.

An IPTV industry spokesperson said, "More and more businessmen are making inquiries about selling content optimized for TV. Open market of IPTV has advantage that it is more than an open market for the purchase and sale of contents. It opens the door for T-commerce and advertisements".

According to the Korea Communications Commission, KT, SK Broadband and LG Telecom invested 720 billion won in IPTV last year and increased the number of subscribers to 1.74 million. However, the combined sales for the three companies are between 150 to 200 billion won last year; they are still lagging behind in terms of profits due to the burden of initial channel supply".

This year, IPTV has come under the spotlight as a potential profit model with the launch of open markets, a factor which differentiates it from subscription-based television.
