The new feature film by director Hong Sang-soo and "Old Boy" by Park Chan-wook will compete at the 57th Cannes Film Festival in France, local film promoters said yesterday.

"Woman is the Future of Man", a film about two men looking for a mutual old girlfriend, and "Old Boy", about a man seeking vengeance for his 15-year confinement, will be the major local films to compete officially at Cannes. Previous works to compete there included "Chunhyang" and "Chihwaseon", both by director Im Kwon-taek.

Director Hong, who gained fame among foreign critics with "The Power of Kangwon Province" and "Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors", made "Woman is the Future of Man" with funding from the French investment company MK2. "Woman" will open locally May 5.

"Old Boy", based on a Japanese comic book, received rave reviews from local critics for innovation and creativity, while drawing 3.3 million moviegoers since its release in November. According to producer Taehung Film, Im's new film, "Low Life", will likely join the competition at Cannes, which will be held May 12 through 23. The company is planning to send the film to Cannes within 10 days.
