Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha met with Audrey Azoulay, the director-general of UNESCO, on Wednesday in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Azoulay welcomed President Moon Jae-in's idea of listing the DMZ as a World Heritage Site jointly with North Korea and promised to join in the efforts.
Moon in a keynote speech at the General Assembly on Tuesday suggested transforming the DMZ into a "global peace zone".
The DMZ has been left largely undisturbed since the end of the Korean war in 1953.
