Los Angeles is home to people of all ethnic backgrounds! It is a hub for cultures, preferences and identities from all over the world.

These two ladies seem like they would have nothing in common, but as it turns out, they share a very special interest.

On a sunny afternoon in May, dozens of people gather for a unique talent show.

Wow! These are the contestants of the first-ever K-POP contest for non-Koreans, held in Los Angeles.

[Interview : Shirlene Decipulo, Particpant] "It's really fun and catchy. And, it's very differentfrom American music. And like, what I like about it is like a lot of time there is a story behind it".

[SOV]
[Interview : Gladys Ferri, Particpant] " It's good to see people like them like reaching their dreams and giving a massage out to people that you know you can do it and that you don't have to sing about certain stuff or look a certain wa"y.

[Interview : ] "hello everyone~"

Tara competed in the preliminary rounds.

Her Korean pronunciation is quite good!

Sarajane takes the stage next with her smooth voice.

Tara and Sarajane are both devoted fans of K-POP. What draws them to Korean popular music

[Interview : Johnny Noh, K-POP Expert 6 Theory Media/allkpop.com ] " It has very westernized sound to it. But, at the same time, it's very unique and different. I mean starting from the strong visual, I think K-POP is a very visual art. In addition to that the strong choreography and the idols, they're all beautiful people".

A few days after the preliminary rounds Sarajane is busy watching Korean TV dramas to find her song for the competition!

[Interview : Sarajane, Participant] "I like watching Korean dramas because they introduce me a lot of Korean cultures, particularly K-POP music. So, I learned about K-POP through watching these dramas".

Sarajane has settled on a song for the competition. For her, the biggest problem is memorizing the lyrics!

She first acquaints herself with the pronunciation by writing down the lyrics as she hears them.

[Interview : Sarajane, Participant] "It's really hard because I don't speak any Korean. But, luckily the internet is a wonderful place and you can always find translations. So, a lot of what I do is look up the English translations, and look at those while I'm learning it in Korean. So, I've kind of understand what the song means".

Sarajane sings with the belief that music is a global language, that it can carry emotions even if she doesn't understand the lyrics' precise meaning.

A week before the competition!

Tara goes out with her friends for a day on the town, at a time when she should be spending all her time practicing!

Tara and her friends look like they've been transported to Korea.

They are in a famous jjimjilbang, a Korean-style spa, in LA's Koreatown.

Eating is the first thing on the to-do list! Tara and her friends have no trouble eating hot and spicy Korean food. But what is she doing here at such a crucial time before the competition
[Interview : Tara Louise, Participant] "I'm coming to this spa often, and I decided to register for the Talent Contest today just for practice to be on the stage for the big show on Friday. So, I hope I do well".

All of the contestants are showing off their skills! Even though the contest only includes customers from the spa, the competition is fierce.

Tara is the only non-Korean participating today.

It's Tara's turn! Will she be able to show off her talent[Interview : ] "I sing everyday in my car. That's where I like to practice songs. And, I practice as much as I can. I'm going to singing "8282" by Dabichi. And, I really hope I win".

It's the day of the competition!

17 contestants vie for plane tickets to visit Korea! Which contestant will take home the coveted prize

[Interview : Roy Choi, Judge The 1st Los Angeles K-POP Contest] "They're gonna be evaluate it on singing ability, stage presence, and Korean accent how they pronounce Korean while they sing. It's a great event. Very talented singers. I hope that the rest of the world sees how great K-POP is".

The contestants have prepared dances and musical instruments in addition to singing!

Their Korean pronunciation has improved significantly as well.

Sarajane earned the audience's love with her emotional performance,

and Tara amazes everyone by hitting her high notes with ease.

All of the performances are over, and the winner is about to be announced!

The moment of truth is here! All of the contestants are nervous, hoping to be awarded for their efforts.

The winner of the day is Tara!

[Interview : ] "I'm super excited. I can't believe that I won. As soon as I get to Korea, the first thing I'm gonna do is to say hi to Shiny and tell them "I love them"".

[Interview : ] "The competition was a lot of fun. I didn't win, but that's ok because I got to know a lot of people who are into K-POP music. And, I'm definitely still gonna love K-POP music. I'll probably listen to it even more".

Non-Koreans' love for K-POP transcends language and national barriers. With their help, K-POP will continue to reach out to more people all over the world.

They certainly do love their K-POP!
And even though she was relaxing on the day of the competition Tara was certainly getting herself mentally prepared by steaming in the Korean spa.
And eating spicy Korean food.
So the competition just wrapped up and she'll soon be on her way to Korea to say hello to Shinee whom we've had in our studios before.
