"We love Korean dramas and Korean music!"

86.5% of Vietnamese students favor Korean pop

The Korean Wave in Vietnam, which started with Korean dramas, is expanding to also include Korean popular music.

According to a survey conducted by the Korean Cultural Center in Vietnam at the end of April this year, to commemorate the sixth month of its opening, 86.5% replied that they "love Korean popular music", in addition to their appreciation for Korean dramas. A total of 1,750 junior high, high school and college Vietnamese students between 13 and 22 years old participated in the survey.

Since the broadcast of Korean dramas, such as "Yumi", "My Love", "Feelings", and "The First Love - 1997" in 1997 via Hanoi Local Broadcasting, the Korean syndrome in country is said to be spurred by the Vietnamese's Confucianist sentiment, which delves into the likes of family, love, and morality. The craze is patronized by young and old, alike. Currently, about 10% of the dramas broadcast in Vietnam are made in Korea.

More recently, Korean popular music is gaining popularity among the Vietnamese youth. Called Korean pop, Korean popular music is broadcast once a week on VDC, a Vietnamese digital broadcasting channel, via a program called "Pop Music of Asian Countries". This exposure is partly responsible for Korean pop's huge popularity in the country.

In a recent concert of major Korean pop acts, which was held to commemorate the 15th year of the amity between Korea and Vietnam, thousands of Vietnamese fans gathered, and even formed fan clubs for Korean singers, demonstrating the fame of Korean pop in Vietnam.
