What Hallyu Stars are asking for in Hallyu

The 'FACE in Japan Premium Event' was held at the Tokyo Dome on the 14th and 15th where we asked participating actors and singers about the way Hallyu should be heading.

Na Moon-hee: I am happy that the Hallyu Expo was able to be hosted on Korea's Independence Day at the Tokyo Dome. The sitcom 'High Kick!' staff all came despite their busy schedules. There are many events of this type recently but I feel they should be prepared more thoroughly. It is the same with drama series. Quality content brings about the power.

Lee Min-woo (M): There must be no pretense. To reach out to the hearts of Japanese fans, you have to present a sincere self on stage. Music has the advantage of crossing language barriers compared to movies and dramas. Hallyu is being led by the mid to older generations, but singers have a relatively young fan base. I would think creating good music and performing often can be the core of leading the young Hallyu.

Tei: I believe the era in which we simply presented our way of Hallyu is over. The market of Hallyu being created is a great accomplishment. However, it seems to be an overstatement to say Hallyu has reached every corner of Japan. Japan is a country where various music genres are loved by their respective manias. K-pop has established itself as a 'mania' genre as well. Without being self-complacent about Hallyu lasting forever, we must continuously create new content and challenge the market. Otherwise, Hallyu can be easily ignored.

Seo Min-jung: Although Japan is very close in proximity, I wondered if the Japanese audience would be able to understand the humor and wit in 'High Kick!'. I went to the exhibit hall at the Tokyo Dome City Prism Hall before the performance, and people were calling Na Moon-hee 'Umma (mom)'. Also there were people impersonating Park Hae-mi, and called me 'Lee Sunsaeng (teacher)' and congratulating my wedding on the 25th. Mainly melo and traditional dramas were popular in Japan, but I hope 'High Kick!' as a sitcom is loved just as well in its new genre.
