What to See at PiFan

The eighth Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) will begin a nine-day run on July 15. Since there will be a number of movies shown during the festival, you might need some help to select films.

With a range of films in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, a total of 261 films from 32 countries will be shown in various venues including Boksagol Cultural Center, Puchon Citizen's Hall, Puchon City Hall and its front lawn square for outdoor screenings in Puchon, west of Seoul.

Here are five movies to screen at PiFan its programme coordinator Creta D. Kim says you shouldn't miss. The schedule of films below can be checked out through its Web sites (www.pifan.or.kr) or their information call reached by (032) 322-9225.

"Aaltra", Belgium/France, 2004, (Puchon Choice)
Directed Benoit Delepine and Gustave Kervern. The film is a story about two neighbors who can't stand each other. But after an accident caused by an agriculture machine which makes them paralyzed from the waist down, both of them set out on a journey to find the equipment's factory together.

"Gagamboy", Philippines, 2003, (Puchon Choice)
Directed by Erik Charles Matti. An ordinary boy happens to become a "spiderman". But his village regards him as more of a nuisance than a super hero. He keeps forging on, trying to use his power for good, with hilariously disastrous results.

"Toolbox Murders", U.S., 2003, (World Fantastic Cinema)
Directed by Barbara Wong. A couple moves into a new apartment and begins renovating the building releasing evil spirits. They witness a series of weird murders. All the victims are killed by drills, claw hammers and saws; thus, `toolbox' murders.

"The Singing Detective", U.K., 2003, (World Fantastic Cinema)
Directed by Keith Gordon. While hospitalized with an extreme case of skin disease, a novelist reworks his first book in his head. Feverish, paranoid and prone to musical outbreaks, he confuses himself with his protagonist, a detective investigating the murder of a prostitute in the 1950s.

"The Miracle of Bern", Germany, 2003, (Family Section)
Directed by Sonke Wortmann. A father's inability to readjust to post-war Germany alienates his family. His son and the will of the West German football team try to rekindle a miracle in the father's heart.
