Wolf Daddy Wins at Hida, Japan

Korean animated short "Wolf Daddy" has won the Semi Grand Prix Award at Japan's Hida International Animation Festival of Folktales and Fables, held March 17th in Gifu, Japan. The 10-minute short, directed by JANG Hyeong-yeon, has traveled to numerous animated film festivals, last year winning the Hiroshima Prize at the 2006 Hiroshima International Animation Festival, one of the top three festivals of its kind.

The Hida event, now in its 5th year, focuses on animations that deal with folktales and fables, and which have a strong storytelling and lyrical emphasis. "Wolf Daddy" is about a novel-writing and Casanova-ish wolf who lives in the serene countryside working on his masterpiece. He is interrupted by a visit from a woman who brings a six-year old girl, Young-hee, to him, saying he is the father, and leaves him to raise her. The wolf is torn between the importance of fatherhood and becoming a great writer.

Director JANG graduated from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He studied animation at the Korean Academy of Animation Arts, which is now part of KOFA. He is currently working on his next project, "The Private Life of Moorimilgum" which is set to be completed this summer.
