Yonsama Changes Attitudes toward Donation in Japan

The Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 11 that the prevailing attitude toward donations in Japan has changed dramatically since it has become known that "Yonsama", or Bae Yong-joon, who is at the zenith of his popularity in Japan, has donated 300 million won to the victims of the tsunami disaster in South Asia.

The newspaper wrote that individuals in Japan and China, where private donations are typically rare, rushed to donate their personal money for relief aid to victims of the tsunami disaster. It reported that in Japan's case, the striking change in attitude took place after the South Korean actor made his contribution to World Vision, an international aid organization.

While not mentioning Bae's name per se, The Wall Street Journal wrote that after "a South Korean TV star" donated to World Vision, thousands of his fans rushed to post donation-related inquiries on World Vision's website, which is quite unprecedented for the Japanese, who have reportedly never made personal donations to disaster victims before.
