Yoon Seok-hwa returns with 'Agnes of God'

A veteran actress who has been laying low for more than a year is finally returning to the stage.

At a recent press conference, Yoon Seok-hwa, 52, was on the verge of tears as she announced her next work "Agnes of God".

"I don't think I will be able to find another job that makes me so nervous, scared and thankful", Yoon said.

Yoon, whose stage career has spanned almost three decades, left for Hong Kong last year after confirming rumors that she falsely claimed that she had graduated from a prestigious woman's university.

The actress, who is also an active play director and the publisher of the influential monthly performance arts magazine "Gaeksuk", said she picked the play as her returning piece because she wanted to go back to the basics -- the days when the only thing she had was a passion for acting.

"I also thought this is a story that can work for anyone regardless of their nationality, language or the age they live in", Yoon said. "Agnes of God" is a special project for the actress. It was Yoon who introduced the Broadway play by American playwright John Pielmeier to the country by translating the script herself and also playing the leading role of Sister Agnes.

The local production of the play starring Yoon premiered in Korea in 1983 and became an instant hit, paving the way for the actress to achieve unrivaled stardom for a theater actress.

This time, however, Yoon will play the role of the atheist psychiatrist Martha Livingston. Yoon explained that Livingston is a very attractive character that any actress would dream of playing.

Since she knew the play so well, Yoon said she tried to bring freshness to the work by collaborating with young film and TV director Han Ji-seung, creator of the hit 2006 TV drama "Alone in Love".

"Agnes of God" evolves around a controversial incident in which a novice nun gives birth to a baby -- which she says is a virgin birth -- but the baby dies. As an investigation follows, the play gives insight into the complex moral and spiritual issues faced by the faithful.

In the three-people show, newcomer Jeon Mi-do will play Agnes while Mother Superior will be played by Han Bok-hee.

"Agnes of God" will be staged from Dec. 6 to Feb. 14 next year at the Installation Theater Jungmiso in Daehangno, Seoul. Tickets run from 25,000 won to 50,000 won. For more information, call (02) 3672-3001.
