Young Filmmakers Raise Environmental, Human Rights Awareness Through Movies

In line with growing concerns over environmental and human rights issues around the world, efforts are being made in Korea to promote awareness through the silver screen. In Korea, young movie directors decided to participate in producing movies dedicated to raising awareness of environmental problems. Koreans love to see movies and gone are the days when environmental campaigns were conducted through slogans and catch phrases.
Efforts are also being made to produce movies to promote human rights issues. After receiving positive feedback last year, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea decided to produce a movie portraying characters battling discrimination. Five directors are working on their own 15-minute stories.

"We don't expect to see a major change in culture with a single movie, but we seek to continue digging out stories that have been left neglected". Movies are now taking more active roles on social issues that are not only entertaining but also offering some food for thought.
