Young Schoolkids Would Rather Be YouTubers Than Doctors

Elementary schoolchildren would rather be YouTubers than doctors, according to a survey on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training conducted an online survey of 24,738 students in 1,200 elementary, middle and high schools.

The top job in the eyes of elementary schoolkids was athlete followed by teacher, but YouTube creator came third. Teacher had been the favorite job until 2017 but dropped to second place last year.

YouTuber first appeared on their radar in fifth place last year and jumped to third this year, edging out doctor, which came fourth.

Middle school students, apparently eyeing a steady job rather than spectacular wealth, still chose teacher as their favorite job, followed by doctor and police officer.

Teacher also remained the favorite job of high school students, followed by police officer and nurse. Among high schoolers, teacher has topped the list since the survey began in 2007.

But a substantial proportion in all three groups said -- nearly one-third in middle school -- said they do not know what they want to do when they grow up.

"If students don't set a clear career goal in high school, they can easily lose their motivation to study", claimed Lee Young-hee at Dankook University.
