Chosun's N.Korea Film Previews at U.K. Parliament

"On the Border", a Chosun Ilbo documentary on North Korean refugees, previewed at the Houses of Parliament in London on Thursday.

The preview, co-hosted by European activist group Christian Solidarity Worldwide and Lord (David) Alton, was attended by over 40 people with human rights organizations and the press. There were 10 MPs including John Stanley, Lord (John) Mason, CSW advocacy director Tina Lambert and the BBC's Olenka Frenkiel. The documentary was a 25-minute abridged English version edited by the BBC from the original four parts, each 50 minutes long, about North Koreans escaping to China.

Lord Alton expressed respect for Chosun Ilbo for conducting the investigation in the face of some danger. Viewers were gripped by scenes of trafficking of North Korean women, drug smuggling by North Korean soldiers and North Korean refugees' crossing the border.

MPs asked director Jeong In-taek and assistant director Han Yong-ho questions about the state of human rights abuses in North Korea. "The shocking scenes in the documentary are all real, and I feel sorry that I can't show more", said Chung.

The BBC shows "Korea: out of the North", a 52-minute English edition of the Chosun Ilbo documentary, at the end of next month.
