More Young Shoppers Prefer Convenience Stores to Avoid Hassle

Large supermarket chains are losing younger customers. According to the Korea Chainstores Association on Monday, customers in their 20s accounted for a mere 5.2 percent of total shoppers at such stores last year, down from 7 percent in 2014.

The number of shoppers in their 30s also fell from 27.6 percent to 25.3 percent over the same period. By contrast, the figure for those aged 50 or over increased from 32.8 percent to 35.5 percent.

The reason for the drop attributed to the changed lifestyle and consumption patterns of younger generations, who prefer convenient stores close to their homes or online shopping.

Large supermarkets are also seeing their overall sales decline. The average number of consumers fell by 108 to 4,612 a day on average and the average single transaction per customer was also down by W1,220.
