New Cable Car to Shuttle People Up Mt. Nam

A new cable car service will be carrying hikers up Mt. Nam from downtown Seoul starting in February of 2018, while a tunnel will connect the foot of the mountain with Myeong-dong subway station, city officials said Monday.

The terminal and observatory will be built on the plot of land where the TBS radio station currently sits at the foot of Mt. Nam. The gondolas then travel 888 m up Mt. Nam.

Twenty gondolas will shuttle hikers to and from the top of the mountain, each with a capacity for 10 passengers.

Hong Sun-ki at the Seoul Metropolitan Government said although there is already a cable car nearby that carries hikers up Mt. Nam, passengers have to wait more than an hour at weekends, and the new facility will carry more passengers.

Urban cable cars are a fad around the world, sparked by an urgent need in some South American cities to connect outlying mountainous slums with the center where the inhabitants work. But several first-world cities have also embraced the concept, mainly because they consider it pretty.
